Chapter 99 Showdown in the Main Building
Chapter 99 Showdown in the Main Building
Dark magic.
The moment the second-circle spell took effect, the entire staircase was plunged into complete darkness.
Kane frowned. All light vanished, and the soldiers and the lesser demons were simultaneously shrouded in inky shadow.
Soon, the screams of several soldiers could be heard.
Kane's eyes sharpened, and he shouted:
"Everyone retreat, prioritize self-preservation, defend back-to-back, and exit the building! Don't panic—panic will only hasten your death!"
The clanging of armor rang out, and the soldiers suppressed their fear as they retreated downstairs.
The next moment, Kane whispered the Cloud Mist spell.
The fog quickly dissipated, covering the entire stairwell.
He closed his eyes and used his water manipulation skills to sense the movement within the clouds.
Three soldiers have been killed, and the attack of the three lesser demons has been slowed down due to their obscured vision.
Without hesitation, he charged forward and swung his scimitar fiercely.
A lesser demon was still chewing on a corpse when it saw a blade flashing towards it.
It howled and brandished its claws in an attempt to defend itself, but a flash of light appeared from the Stonefist Technique on Kane's Armor—a first-circle spell of the Transmutation school that could instantly amplify power.
With a heavy blow, the lesser demon was cleaved in two, its screams abruptly ceasing. The other two lesser demons hastily fled.
Just then, a voice rang out:
"Blazing Orb"
Oh no! Kane sensed that a blazing sphere was rapidly taking shape.
He lunged to the side, but a huge explosion had already occurred, and the entire stairwell trembled from the impact, with flames flying everywhere.
He felt a tremendous force strike him, a burning pain spreading from his back, a sweet taste in his throat, and he vomited blood.
His immortality ability quickly healed his injuries, but he didn't have time to feel his body recovering—he raised his hand to touch his armor and painfully discovered that the enchantment marks on it had faded considerably, clearly indicating that he had been seriously injured in the explosion, but thankfully they hadn't completely failed yet.
"This is money..." Kane's face twitched slightly.
Enchanted equipment is extremely valuable, and repairing it after it is damaged is very expensive.
Although it can be reworked, with his current enchanting level, he can only restore it to the Trick level enchantment at most, which is far from the original first-level enchantment effect.
Kane's mind raced. He suddenly held his breath, lay flat on the ground, closed his eyes, and pretended to be a cold corpse.
The next moment, footsteps approached. He suddenly swung his sword—something felt off; it was another demon.
At this moment, the effects of the Dark Magic finally dissipated.
The stairwell was engulfed in flames, with broken steps, fallen soldiers, and the corpses of lesser demons scattered everywhere. One lesser demon had clearly been killed by the fireball earlier—the enemy didn't care about the damage to their own side.
Kane stood up, looked at Conrad who still had a gentle expression, and said, "You know."
Conrad smiled. "The fact that you could jump off a cliff with my body in your arms at the mountain stronghold already proves your special abilities. Is it flesh regeneration? Rapid healing? Or resurrection from the dead?"
He was referring to the characteristics of different demons.
Seeing that Kane's expression remained unchanged, Conrad continued with a smile:
"So, Kane, you did gain the corresponding abilities during the Stigmata Ritual, it's just... you haven't shown them yet."
He looked at Kane. "Stop everything now, come back, and we can let bygones be bygones."
"Okay," Kane laughed.
The next moment, he charged forward, leaped over the broken staircase, and drew his sword to slash!
The scimitar, enhanced by the Stone Fist technique, slashed down fiercely, but was blocked by a shield that suddenly lit up just before it could reach Conrad.
The shield dissipated, but the attack was halted.
Conrad pointed his arm, and Kane was sent flying by an invisible force, crashing heavily into the wall and spitting out another mouthful of blood.
He collapsed, unable to move.
Conrad slowly floated up into the air, looking down at him condescendingly: "Since you're unwilling to come back, then I'll have no choice but to take you back."
Just then, screams came from below. Kane's expression hardened—it was the soldiers who had escaped from the main building.
It seems there are other guards, probably at least Tier 2.
Conrad smiled. "They're worthless except for you. Just mortals."
Kane sighed. "Do you think you've won? Your plan..."
Conrad spread his hands: "You're right, but you're also wrong. Once this is exposed, I'll disappear without a trace."
But the experiments with demons will continue—after all, with the ether weakened, the royal family, now only able to raise white dragons, will not give up any opportunity to increase their power, even if it means allying with the abyss.
Kane frowned: "Even if a mage tower master was killed and his body was devoured by ghouls?"
Conrad shook his head: "You underestimate the arrogance of spellcasters. The death of a third-tier mage will be seen as an accident by them. With a little manipulation..."
He said calmly, "No one—no royalty, nobility, spellcasters—will abandon a legion of demons."
Nord needs greater power to face the high-ranking forces of the other five nations—the pure-blooded elf mages of the Susas Elven Court, the magic cannon array of the Free City-State, the sword saint of the Contract Alliance…
The white dragon Nord could rely on was old, and the new young dragon was too young.
He laughed: "So even knowing that the demon cult is behind it, would the queen of the royal family really give up this power?"
Once Nord starts this arms race, the other five nations will naturally follow suit. Even if you instigate this coup, how long can you delay it? A year, or two?
But to Conrad's disappointment—and a growing unease—Kane's expression remained unchanged. He simply looked at the other man and suddenly laughed:
"A delay of one or two years is already within my expectations."
"As expected?" Conrad frowned, but quickly relaxed. "Never mind, I'll extract the information from your memories after I subdue you."
Kane stood up with a smile: "Aren't you curious why I'm not worried at all—even though I'm certainly no match for you?"
Conrad's expression remained unchanged, but his eyes darkened slightly: "What did you do?"
Kane looked out the window in the distance:
"Aren't you concerned about those two carriages I brought into the manor? They should... have been set on fire as I instructed, right?"
Kane had already laid out a backup plan the moment he entered the manor.
He deliberately divided his forces into two groups: two soldiers drove the carriages and lit the fire at the agreed time.
The others followed him into the main building.
Conrad's expression changed drastically, and he finally guessed a possibility: "Dynamite? You..."
Kane smiled.
A deafening explosion suddenly erupted outside the manor at that moment.
The ground shook violently, and the main building of the manor groaned as if it were on the verge of collapse.
Bricks and stones fell in a flurry, and flames shot into the sky...
