Chapter 98 Showdown with the Border Patrol
Chapter 98 Showdown with the Border Patrol
Just as the atmosphere in the room became awkward, four more people walked in: Kyle Carpenter, the director of the show, and an assistant.
The remaining two were a woman in her forties and an old acquaintance of Lee Ethan, Nicole Watts.
The girl who used to work part-time at a convenience store has now transformed, exuding charm and allure with every gesture, a true blonde beauty.
The two old friends stared at each other blankly, never expecting to reunite under these circumstances after not seeing each other for half a year, and to participate in the same program.
Lee Esen spoke up beforehand.
"Nicole, it's been a long time."
"haven't seen you for a long time"
This conversation surprised everyone present; they never expected that a police officer would know a Hollywood newcomer.
Only Rose Kent, the manager, knew about the past relationship between the two. She didn't want her artist to be involved in a scandal with a police officer, especially since the artist had a promising future.
So the agent stood between the two and shouted to the director who was filming.
"Carpenter, let's get down to business."
"Yes, this episode will feature Ethan leading Nicole to smuggle into America from the border here on the map. They will escape to the evacuation point and that will be considered a successful escape. The border patrol will begin the moment the two enter the country. If there are no objections, the episode will start in one hour."
The group dispersed, leaving Ethan Lee alone in a room with Nicole Watts. Rose Kent was still watching him closely, but Ethan ignored the old woman and focused on choosing his tools while studying the map to find a good route. Nicole Watts, standing beside him, seemed about to say something but then stopped herself.
Meanwhile, the group, led by patrol captain David Chambers, was also discussing countermeasures.
David Chambers said in a deep voice.
"This time, we're bringing police dogs."
Team vice-captain Jordan Wilson, who was standing to the side, was stunned.
"Boss, there's a female celebrity on the other side dragging us down. Bringing in police dogs and ending things too quickly might not be good. The director will have a problem with that. At least let them last half the battle."
"I just want to trample California's police vanguard underfoot. Didn't the governor say their police are excellent?"
,,
""
Jordan Wilson wanted to say that Ethan Lee was indeed excellent, at least based on his record. He had also been to the elementary school shooting and witnessed Lee's abilities firsthand. However, he knew what kind of person his teammate was, so he kept quiet.
Others also started to stir up trouble. Some were equally unhappy with the governor's speech, while others were racist, questioning why an American police officer of Asian descent, who was clearly at the bottom of society, was now being represented and asking why a mere Asian person was allowed to appear on the show.
David Chambers clapped his hands.
"Alright, it's settled then. Go and get ready."
Four hours later.
Ethan Lee brought Nicole Watts to the border town of Tekat. The city of Mexico across the border was also called Tekat, but it was dozens of times larger than America.
Because there was a cameraman following them, Lee Ethan and Nicole Watts didn't chat. Nicole Watts glanced at the camera above her head and realized that everyone had been exposed.
"Should we go straight into the mountains?"
"No, we'll take a taxi."
"Take a taxi?"
Nicole Watts looked puzzled. Wasn't she afraid of getting caught if she took a car? Her original plan was to go into the mountains and play hide-and-seek.
Li Yisen whispered a few words in the other person's ear and then found a black car.
"Take us to Portrero, $100."
The nearly 60-year-old veteran driver glanced at the photographer who was about to confront him, and then didn't refuse.
"Okay, are you filming a TV show?"
"Hmm, have you seen the show 'Crossing the Border'?"
The experienced driver was quite excited upon hearing this, after all, it was a popular program on Columbia Television.
"Of course I've seen it. Get in the car quickly, I absolutely won't let you get caught by the patrol."
The patrol team had already seen the three people leaving in a car under the surveillance of the Sky Eye. They noticed the vehicle and its license plate, and two law enforcement vehicles gave chase.
After driving for a long distance, the driver finally recognized the woman wearing the hat.
"You're the female lead in the movie 'Love in Troubled Times'."
Nicole Watts nodded.
"Yes."
"Hehe, I've also given rides to big stars."
Just then, Li Yisen shouted.
"Sir, we can get off here."
"here?"
"right."
Seeing this, Nicole Watts also got out of the car, but before leaving, she sweetly asked for something.
"If the patrol stops you, please don't tell them where we got off."
"Of course."
"Thank you so much."
The three got out of the car and walked towards a small village at the foot of the mountain. The environment there was quite harsh, and the stench from the sewage ditch made Nicole Watts frown.
"Ethan, if we just walk into the village openly, won't the villagers give us away?"
"People in these border villages generally don't talk much, and they're afraid we'll retaliate for border smuggling."
"Too."
The three quickly entered the mountains, their destination being the Cleveland National Forest, dozens of kilometers away.
Only then did Li Yisen speak up and ask a question.
"Nicole, why are you participating in a cross-country program like this, which involves walking for a long time?"
"I encountered some problems while filming recently. The investor and director were both shot and killed by a sniper rifle, which also affected me. So I came here because I wanted to broaden my acting range."
'
'
Lee Ethan paused for a moment. Good heavens, isn't this the film crew where he killed Frederick's son?
Meanwhile, on the other side, the experienced driver was finally stopped at the toll station, where several fully armed border police officers approached with submachine guns.
"get off."
The old man got off the bus without hesitation, intending not to say anything, but the burly man in front of him frightened him.
David Chambers said viciously.
"Who are you carrying?"
"Nobody's here."
"I advise you not to cause trouble for yourself. Just tell me where you're getting off the bus."
The old man finally gave an answer.
"Under the G1 bridge."
"I hope you're not lying."
In fact, the old man deliberately said it was a few hundred meters away, but when the police entered the mountain, the distance between the two sides was 1.5 kilometers.
On the other side, Li Yisen and his companion had entered a patch of tall grass, which looked like it had been deliberately planted for breeding.
For the sake of the show's effect, Li Yisen could only explain his next objective to the camera.
"If nothing unexpected happens, we've already distanced ourselves from the patrol. This is a grassy area; we can simply drag our feet and create footprints that lead us in the wrong direction."
The three of them dragged their feet and did leave obvious tracks on the grass. They made one or two tracks, or even circled around, and finally left the grass along the ridge, leaving not many obvious tracks.
The next step was to continue along a stream, where walking in water 30 centimeters deep would leave no trace, but Nicole Watts hesitated.
"The water is too cold."
Ethan Lee then realized that he and the photographer could indeed withstand the cold water in winter, but it would be really uncomfortable for an ordinary woman to soak in cold water for more than ten minutes. If he remembered correctly, Nicole Watts' body could not withstand too much cold.
"How about I carry you on my back?"
Nicole Watts looked at the camera and shook her head.
"No."
Ultimately, the actress still walked into the water.
By the time the patrol team found the correct route and arrived at the village, they learned the whereabouts of the two men by asking the children and caught up with them. By then, the two sides were already 3 kilometers apart.
The patrol team did indeed speed up the journey with the help of the police dogs until they reached the grassland. However, the police dogs, which were said to have helped the patrol team capture thousands of people, failed this time. They wandered around following the fake route created by Lee Ethan, wasting a lot of time.
Half an hour later, the patrol team members looked at the original position again and saw the serpentine tracks left by the patrol team members. They had to force a smile. Should they blame their old partner for not being good enough?
Captain David Chambers was in a terrible mood, but he had to pretend to be optimistic and complain a few times in front of the camera.
"Our old partner has become a bit dumbfounded after being played like this."
The photographer wanted to tell Ye Zi to be as stupid as dogs, but dared not utter a sound.
After wasting most of the hour, the patrol team finally managed to cross the grass by finding faint footprints. The so-called footprints were very blurry on camera, as if they didn't exist.
Next, the patrol team came to a 4-meter-long stream. At a glance, there were no footprints at all, and even the police dogs could not smell them.
David Chambers no longer harbored any illusions. He understood that the young man was indeed very capable, but even so, he did not intend to give up because he somewhat disliked people of Asian descent.
"Call in helicopters for help, at least two."
"Yes."
Calling in helicopters proves they've backed down, which makes the director behind them even happier. Without a big show, it wouldn't be exciting, and who would watch it?
On the other side, Ethan and his two companions arrived at a bridge archway. Passing through this archway would take them to Cleveland National Forest, completing most of their journey.
Looking at the opening blocked by several wire fences, Li Yisen suddenly had a question.
"Nicole, how about a surprise?"
Nicole Watts knew Ethan Lee well; she knew that cheeky expression.
There are cameras.
"I'm just leaving a small gift."
Lee Ethan took out a small toy called a "thunderbolt," which would make a piercing sound if the fuse was touched. A long fuse was attached to a rusty wire, and it would go off when touched.
In reality, this would be considered a booby trap, something Lee Ethan was very familiar with, as it had killed more than one or two enemies.
Nicole Watts couldn't help but cover her mouth and laugh when she saw this, displaying her charm.
"You're really bad."
"With you as a burden, we can't afford not to buy some time."
"snort."
Nicole Watts really wanted to pinch the person in front of her waist, but she held back in front of the camera and could only give them a beautiful eye roll.
"Let's go, there's still half the journey left."
"Wait a moment."
Lee Ethan suddenly stopped in his tracks because his keen hearing detected some familiar sounds.
"Quick, run! Those guys are using helicopters! Get into the bushes!"
As a helicopter flew overhead and another appeared in the distance, Nicole Watts couldn't help but feel a little uneasy.
"That's going too far."
"They can't afford to lose."
'
No matter how much the two complained, they had to wait for the helicopter to fly over before they could continue, which wasted a lot of time.
After the two had walked less than 1 kilometer in an hour, they suddenly heard the sound of thunder in the distance, along with the faint barking of dogs. The patrol team was coming after them.
The two fleeing men exchanged a glance, both able to see the other's urgency, and the sound of dogs barking came from ahead.
"Woof woof"
In fact, it wasn't just the two groups chasing each other in the vicinity; deep within the Cleveland National Forest, several people were also lying on the ground observing the situation, each with a box on their back.
