Chapter 58 Soloasde's Helplessness
Chapter 58 Soloasde's Helplessness
Suddenly, Klein remembered one of Evan's many instructions to him that was particularly special: to let Leonard know about the mastermind behind the scenes as much as possible and to drag him down with him.
Klein also observed Leonard and strongly suspected that the secret behind Leonard was related to high-sequence power. At least when Klein explained to Leonard that there was a mastermind behind many extraordinary events that had recently occurred in Tingen, Leonard was very receptive and almost immediately believed it all and actively cooperated.
This indicates that the high-sequence power behind Leonard is capable of detecting interference from the mastermind. Since Evan made arrangements to let him know the mastermind's next move, he must have left a solution. Klein believes that Leonard is the solution hinted at by Evan.
With that thought in mind, Klein put his coat back on, adjusted his top hat, and left with only the iron ore investment information in his hand.
Before leaving, Klein told Barker that he had reservations about investing in the iron ore mine and would conduct an investigation.
Although Butler Buck felt this was unnecessary, Evan had repeatedly emphasized his trust in Klein, so he didn't say anything more and allowed Klein to take the documents.
The night watchmen work in shifts, and Leonard happened to be resting today, just like Klein. So Klein didn't hesitate and boarded the public carriage to head towards Leonard's house.
Having already been to Leonard's house before, Klein knew the way well. He changed carriages a few times and easily traveled the farthest distance for the least amount of money, quickly arriving at Leonard's house again.
After ringing the doorbell, Leonard didn't open the door for a long time. However, today he didn't have his usual carefree and unrestrained demeanor. Instead, he kept yawning and had dark circles under his eyes.
Leonard ushered Klein into the house, and while making tea for him, he complained:
"Did you know that those on night duty usually sleep during the day? What's the matter that you have to come find me now?"
Klein took the tea Leonard had brewed, and felt it was too hot to handle. He placed it directly on the coffee table and asked in confusion:
"You're supposed to be an extraordinary individual on the Sleepless Path, yet you've got dark circles under your eyes. How many days have you not slept?"
Leonard looked at the radiant Klein and said, on the verge of tears:
"Recently, my grandma has become obsessed with playing cards. A couple of days ago, I just finished my shift and she dragged me to play cards with her. I thought I could just play for a bit and she would get tired and stop, but I didn't expect that my grandma could play even longer than me. She had great luck and was very excited. She dragged me to play cards for a whole day and night."
As you know, I usually don't sleep during my shifts. Staying up for three days and three nights straight like this is unbearable even for someone who doesn't sleep.
Listening to Leonard's complaints, Klein's lips twitched. He never expected that an old lady's card addiction could wear down a sleepless person.
Taking a deep breath and suppressing a laugh, Klein decided to get straight to the point, handing Leonard the documents he had been holding and saying:
"Take a look at this investment information first, and then we can talk about things."
Leonard looked at Klein with some surprise, wondering what he meant, but he still took the documents and read them carefully.
Leonard initially appeared relaxed, but his expression grew increasingly serious towards the end. He even suspected that Klein might know about the old man within him and had deliberately provided this information to test him. (Leonard likely knew the old man was a Thief, as he had willingly requested the "Vein Thief" seal artifact during the final battle in Tingen; however, he was unaware that the Thief pathway included the "Parasite" sequence.)
However, he quickly dismissed this conjecture because they had an unspoken agreement that they should not deliberately investigate each other's secrets before dealing with the mastermind behind the scenes. Leonard did not believe that Klein would dare to break this agreement.
"It seems like there's nothing wrong with it; it's a high-quality investment project. What do you mean by showing it to me?"
Upon hearing this, Klein took the document again, pretending to leave while saying:
"If you didn't figure it out, there's no point in explaining. I'm leaving now."
"Hey, hey, hey, don't go! I was just joking with you, why are you getting so worked up? This is just a con artist committing fraud, you could have just reported it to the captain and had him arrested, did you really need to come all the way here to tell me?"
When Leonard saw Klein about to leave, he hurriedly stopped him and voiced his own question.
Seeing that Leonard was no longer pretending to be confused, Klein solemnly said to him:
"The problem now is that I don't understand why this scammer is so important, which is why I thought of discussing it with you."
Upon hearing this, Leonard fell silent. He understood Klein's implied meaning: this conman was connected to the mastermind they were working together to deal with, so Klein dared not make a decision on his own and came to discuss it with him.
Because of the old man's reminders within him and Klein's hints during this time, Leonard has a certain understanding of the mastermind's characteristic of "every word spoken will be known".
Therefore, he had many doubts in his heart, but he could not express them aloud.
"What...what's your opinion of this fraudster?"
Leonard tapped the sofa armrest with his fingers, trying to figure out what Klein was thinking.
"I don't have any specific ideas, I just know that this scammer is very important, but I have no one to talk to, so I came to you."
Moreover, it seems the mastermind behind this has encountered some problems, and may be unable to exert strong intervention recently.
Klein also wanted to see how Leonard would respond, so he directly revealed important information and gave him a push.
As expected, Leonard's eyes lit up when he heard this information. He didn't even want to investigate why Klein knew this information; he was extremely excited.
"Give me some time to think about it, and I'll tell you my solution as soon as possible."
With Klein present, Leonard couldn't consult the "old man" within him, so he had to send Klein away first.
Klein had anticipated this, and unsurprisingly got up and left.
To be honest, he's really looking forward to the showdown between the high-sequence forces behind Leonard and the mastermind behind the scenes.
After Klein left, Leonard couldn't wait and whispered:
"Old man! Old man! Did you hear that? The mastermind behind this is having problems. Can we use this window of opportunity to take care of Tingen in one fell swoop?"
After a long while, just as Leonard was getting impatient, an old voice finally reached his ears:
"I really didn't want to get involved in this. If I had known that there would be so many problems in Tingen, I would never have temporarily taken up residence in your body."
Leonard smiled sheepishly, but at the same time he was filled with relief. If it weren't for the old man's presence, he wouldn't even have been able to be sure that there was a mastermind behind Tingen, and he wouldn't even know how he died.
