Chapter 75 Participating in the Competition
Chapter 75 Participating in the Competition
Captain Eric and Captain Martin quickly responded politely, since, judging from their levels alone, the wizard Barton in front of them was one level higher than them, and was already at the same level as their escort target, Celia.
After exchanging a few pleasantries with the two captains, Barton changed the subject, his gaze sweeping over Li Ang and the other young apprentice wizards, a playful glint in his eyes.
"Just watching might be a bit boring for everyone. I wonder if any of you friends from Lelita would be interested in participating? The main purpose of our competition is to inspire fighting spirit and encourage mutual learning. If some top players from the outer towers were to participate, it would surely ignite the passion of those youngsters even more."
Both captains were taken aback by what they heard. Captain Eric frowned and said:
"Professor Barton, this...this is an internal competition of your school. Wouldn't it be against the rules for us to participate?"
Barton the Wizard laughed and waved his hand, saying:
"Rules are rules, but people are flexible. It's just an exchange match, no problem. Let's treat it as a friendly sparring session between the younger generation of the two towers, and stop when we've reached a point. How about it? Is anyone willing to step up and let our Obsidian Tower witness the power of the Lyrita Elemental School?"
His gaze, filled with obvious expectation, slowly swept across the faces of Li Ang, Elisa, Miguel, and the others.
Li Ang wasn't very interested in this. He lowered his head and started counting the black spots on the floor tiles, as did the other team members. Although a few combat enthusiasts in the sixth squad were eager to try, they couldn't participate on their own because their captain hadn't given the order.
Seeing the lack of interest from the crowd, the wizard Barton was not discouraged. He continued in a seductive voice:
"The Tower takes this exchange competition very seriously, so it has come up with a lucky prize: the winner of this competition will receive a bottle of diluted Fountain of Wisdom."
A wellspring of wisdom?
The word seemed to possess a magical power, instantly replacing the hesitation on Captain Eric and Captain Martin's faces with shock. Several members of the enforcement team even held their breath, their eyes blazing with extreme desire.
Noticing his companions' intense reaction, Li Ang whispered to Elisa beside him, "..."
"The Fountain of Wisdom? What's that?"
Elisa took a deep breath, suppressing the longing in her eyes, and explained in a low voice:
"The Fountain of Wisdom is a legendary treasure, said to originate from Avalon, the lost sacred land of the elves. The complete water of the spring possesses the power to grant those who drink it endless wisdom, but no one has seen it since. It is said that the Obsidian Tower was fortunate enough to obtain a bottle in its early years, but instead of choosing who to drink it, they diluted it and rewarded more meritorious individuals. I heard my grandfather say that although the diluted water does not have the legendary magical effects, the first time one drinks it, it can still permanently increase the drinker's spiritual power."
She paused, her tone becoming even more serious:
"The amount of growth depends on the drinker's own talent. The higher the talent, the greater the benefit. Moreover, even after dilution, this spring water is extremely rare. The Obsidian Tower usually only rewards it to those who have made outstanding contributions to the tower or those with exceptional talent. Outsiders have no chance to see it at all. I never expected that they would be willing to give away a bottle as a prize for the competition this time..."
Li Ang was deeply shaken. The prospect of permanently enhancing one's mental strength was incredibly tempting for any wizard.
Although this world has equipment like the Wise Man's Ring that can store extra mental energy, it only allows for a quick replenishment once one's own mental energy is depleted.
With this spring water, the upper limit of mental power can be increased, and theoretically, it may even be possible to cast spells beyond one's level!
Suppressing his desire, Li Ang looked at Captain Eric, trying to discern his thoughts from the captain's expression.
After all, I am still on a mission and cannot make decisions on my own.
At this moment, Li Ang was not the only one looking at their respective captains.
All the members of the enforcement team looked at their captain with longing, hoping to be granted permission to participate.
Captain Eric and Captain Martin exchanged a glance; they both saw the undisguised desire in their players' eyes.
Ultimately, both men agreed to the invitation, and Captain Eric announced it to all the members:
"All team members who wish to participate may sign up on their own, but it cannot interfere with the mission. If there is a conflict with the mission, the competition must be terminated immediately."
This sentence, like water dripping into a hot oil pan, stirred up a burst of excitement.
Ultimately, all eight members of the enforcement team signed up for the competition, except for the two captains who were unable to participate because their levels exceeded the requirements.
"Good, as expected of the elites of the Elemental School, excellent." Seeing the other party's enthusiasm and the fact that everyone had signed up for the competition, Instructor Barton clapped his hands and laughed.
"I will arrange the order of the competition for everyone right away. The competition is scheduled to begin this afternoon."
Please take a short rest and have lunch to recharge. We'll see you at the competition this afternoon.
After Barton finished speaking, he turned and left, the smile on his face turning into a smug look of triumph as he turned away.
He strode through the corridor connecting the area behind the stands to the event operations office.
Several wizards dressed in green robes were adjusting the battle order in front of a huge battle chart. When they saw Barton enter, they all bowed and paid their respects.
A middle-aged witch, also dressed in a blue robe, looked up and, seeing it was Barton, asked:
"How's it going, Barton? Have those little guys from Lelita taken the bait?"
Barton walked up to the huge battle schedule, a smirk playing on his lips:
"Of course, Lina. With the Fountain of Wisdom as bait, no wizard could resist the temptation, and they all agreed to participate."
Upon hearing this, the wizard Lina smiled with satisfaction.
"Excellent, this is a rare opportunity. The elemental school of Riley Wizard Tower has always been regarded as the orthodox and benchmark within the Alliance, and they're so arrogant. This time, they've delivered themselves to our doorstep, giving our younger generation of Obsidian Tower a chance to defeat their proud elemental magic in a fair and square manner."
Her tone carried an undisguised competitive edge; the Wizarding Alliance was not a monolithic entity, and various forms of competition existed between the different towers.
Barton nodded: "That's right. Under normal circumstances, we might not have much of a chance of winning, but this year is different. This year, we have her."
The two exchanged a smile, their eyes filled with unwavering confidence.
At noon, Obsidian Tower prepared a sumptuous lunch for the guests who had traveled from afar. The long table was filled with Obsidian City's specialties, including golden-brown and crispy roasted ibex legs, a thick soup made with local black mushrooms and cheese, and a type of silverfish that was said to be a specialty of an underground lake, with incredibly tender flesh.
However, most of the young members of the enforcement team had no appetite; their minds were already on the afternoon's competition. The allure of the "Fountain of Wisdom" was simply too great for them.
As Li Ang ate his roasted lamb leg and drank his thick soup, he thought to himself that it would be even better if there was some fruit wine.
He wasn't too worried about the afternoon's match; with the support of multiple pieces of equipment, he was confident he was invincible among his peers.
