Chapter 363: It’s a Poisonous Mushroom
While Vera Xavier remained perfectly calm, everyone else wore varied expressions.
Aaron Cheney was beside himself with anxiety, praying over and over for Jack Judd to hurry back. Otherwise, on his own, he’d never be able to eat that mountain of rocks.
The corner of Alistair Forrest’s mouth twitched. Even if he wanted to put in a good word for Vera Xavier, this wasn’t the right time. He didn’t even know how to begin comforting her. Sure enough, an amateur was an amateur. The results were simply too disastrous to look at.
Meanwhile, Susan Caldwell and Skylar Crowe could no longer hide their smug expressions, while Irene Jensen sighed.
Susan Caldwell turned and thanked the jade consultant who had helped her pick the stones, then said to Vera Xavier with a beaming smile, "I’m so sorry, but I’ve won. When do you plan on eating these rocks?"
Vera Xavier pointed to the pile of rocks behind her and said, "What’s your hurry? I still have a pile here that haven’t been cut. We’ll see who has the last laugh."
Susan Caldwell pursed her lips into a smile and said, "You can say that, but stone gambling isn’t won by having more stones. With rocks like yours, I doubt you’ll find a single piece of jade. Stop putting on a brave front."
Vera Xavier let out a soft laugh. Skylar Crowe started to gloat, looking down her nose at Vera Xavier and saying, "If I were you, I would have been on my knees begging for mercy long ago! You’re just some country bumpkin who crawled out of who-knows-where. What makes you think you can compete with our Susan?"
She finished with a snort. "But if you crawl between my legs right now, I might put in a good word for you with Susan so you don’t meet such a miserable end."
Vera Xavier knew Skylar had always been an idiot, and dismissed her words as nothing more than a dog barking.
Susan Caldwell put on a graceful air and said, "Skylar, watch your words. She may be crude, but you don’t have to stoop to her level."
Skylar Crowe cackled. "You’re right, Susan. She’s just some mud-caked peasant from god-knows-what village. Even speaking one more word to her is giving her too much credit. I just find it strange. How can someone so stupid exist in this world! She’s actually digging her own grave!"
Susan Caldwell smiled and, with the air of a victor, said to Vera Xavier, "I’m not an unforgiving person. If you kneel and beg me now, I might consider letting you off the hook."
Vera Xavier smiled and said, "What you’re really thinking right now is probably: ’I just want to see this clueless woman who doesn’t know her place get on her knees and beg me. I’m going to slap her face hard, throw her to the ground, and stomp on her. And in the end, she’ll have to eat every last one of these stones! It would be best if it killed her!’"
She asked Susan Caldwell, "Am I right?"
Susan Caldwell’s face stiffened, her brow knitting slightly. Vera Xavier added, "Looks like I guessed right. As for me... I don’t have many virtues. If I have to name one, though, it’s persistence. I don’t give up until the very end."
Having said her piece, she turned to a staff member. "Keep cutting. I refuse to believe my luck is so bad that I’ll lose to a poisonous mushroom—all pretty on the outside and rotten to the core."
Alistair Forrest, who had been watching her the whole time, heard this and inexplicably found it rather impressive. He let out a soft chuckle.
Still, judging by the quality of the stones she had already opened and the ones she had left, she was guaranteed to lose today.
A wave of melancholy washed over him. How could he help his little Honey?
Aaron Cheney piped up from the side, "Third Sis, why is she a poisonous mushroom?"
