Chapter 360: The Ceiling Never Looked So Good
Chapter 360: The Ceiling Never Looked So Good
The group trudged through the final stretch of the Wasteland, the familiar rocky canyon opening before them like a wound in the earth. The Dark Elf village came into view, its silver lanterns glowing faintly against the perpetual twilight of the underground caverns. The Elder was waiting at the entrance, his weathered face creased with relief as his yellow eyes swept over the returning group. His gaze lingered on the new figure among them but he did not question. Instead, he simply bowed his head.
"You have returned. And it seems your journey was... successful." His voice carried a note of genuine warmth. "You must be weary. Rest. Eat. The village is yours for as long as you need."
Azrynn stepped forward, bowing deeply. "Thank you, Elder."
The group was led to the same guest houses they had used before. Ignis collapsed onto the nearest bed without a word, her flames dimming to a faint, contented glow. Lilith settled into a chair by the window, her crimson eyes already scanning the village below. Isolde sank onto a low cushion near the wall. She pulled her knees up and let out a slow breath.
Alice stood at the window, her cat ears twitching as she took in the sight of the Dark Elf village below. Her dark violet eyes swept over the buildings, the lanterns, the figures moving through the streets. A low, thoughtful hum escaped her throat.
"So this is the village. There are many people here." Her tail swayed slowly behind her. "Not bad. It’s quieter than I expected. I thought there would be more chaos."
Lilith’s voice drifted from the chair, smooth and amused. "It’s a small settlement, but it has survived here for generations. They’ve learned to adapt."
Alice’s ears twitched. "Adapt. Right. Sounds like a lot of work."
Ignis’s voice came from the bed, muffled by the pillow. "Haahh...I’m so tired I could sleep for a week..."
Lilith’s crimson eyes gleamed. "Then sleep. We can celebrate your heroic victory later. After you’ve regained the energy to appreciate it."
A soft knock came at the door. A young Dark Elf woman entered, carrying a tray of food—fresh bread, roasted meat, and a pitcher of water. She set it down with a respectful bow.
"The Elder sends these as a gift. Please, eat and regain your strength."
She slipped out before anyone could respond.
Ignis’s head lifted from the pillow, her golden eyes locking onto the tray with renewed energy. "Ooh! Food!"
Alice’s ears twitched as she watched Ignis’s sudden surge of energy, a small, amused smile crossing her face. "You were just about to fall asleep, and now you’re ready to eat everything in sight."
Ignis’s voice came out, muffled by a mouthful of bread. "Dergon metabilimsh. I need a lot o’ food." She swallowed, grinning. "Especially after a fight like that!"
Lilith rose gracefully from her chair by the window, her silver-white hair catching the faint lantern light as she crossed the room. She didn’t pause, didn’t hesitate. She simply walked to the bed where Adam lay unconscious, his breathing slow and steady, and settled herself beside him.
Alice’s cat ears shot up. Her dark violet eyes narrowed, and her tail lashed behind her. Her voice was sharp, incredulous.
"Wait—what are you doing?"
Lilith’s voice drifted back, calm and utterly unbothered. "I’m tired. I’m going to rest."
Alice’s ears flattened. "Rest? You can rest anywhere! Why do you have to rest right next to him?!"
Lilith’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile as she adjusted herself beside Adam, her head settling against his shoulder. "I’m more comfortable here. I’ve grown accustomed to sleeping beside him."
Alice’s tail lashed faster. "What do you mean by that?!"
Lilith didn’t answer. She simply closed her eyes, her arm draping across Adam’s chest in a gesture of quiet possession.
Alice’s eye twitched. She marched over to the bed, her bare feet silent against the stone floor, and climbed onto Adam’s other side. Her voice was sharp, defiant.
"This is my spot. You move, spider."
Lilith didn’t respond. She didn’t even open her eyes. Her breathing had already slowed, soft and even.
Alice’s ears flattened further. She huffed, then settled against Adam’s other side, her tail curling possessively around his leg. Her voice was low, a growl of irritation.
"Did you hear me?"
Lilith’s voice came out soft, almost sleepy. "Mm... no."
Alice’s eye twitched again. She pressed closer to Adam, her hand resting on his chest. Despite her irritation, the warmth of his body was soothing, and her eyelids grew heavy.
Isolde watched the scene unfold from her cushion by the wall. A long, weary sigh escaped her. She pushed herself up slowly, her pale face still drawn from the effort of the Crimson Veil.
"I’m going to my room. Call me if anything happens."
Ignis’s voice came from the bed, muffled by a mouthful of bread. "Mmm! Okay!!"
Isolde paused at the door, glancing back at the tangled pile of bodies on the bed. Isolde shook her head slowly, a faint, almost imperceptible smile crossing her lips.
"...Ridiculous."
She slipped out of the room, the door clicking softly behind her.
Minutes passed or perhaps longer. Time moved strangely in the quiet of the village, unbound by the relentless pace of the surface world.
Then, a shift. A slow, deep breath. The subtle creak of the bed frame as someone stirred.
Adam’s eyes fluttered open, the rough-hewn stone ceiling of the Dark Elf guest house slowly swimming into focus. For a moment, he simply stared at the uneven surface above him, his mind sluggish, still caught between the haze of unconsciousness and the sharp edges of waking.
Then he felt it.
A weight pressing against his chest, warm and steady. He tried to move, but his body wouldn’t respond because something was pinning him down.
His gaze drifted downward.
Ignis was sprawled across his chest like a particularly contented lizard, her fiery hair spilling across his collarbone, her face nestled against his shoulder. A faint, rhythmic flame flickered from her horns in time with her breathing, soft and warm against his skin.
To his left, Alice was curled against his side, her head resting on his bicep, her cat ears twitching occasionally in her sleep. Her tail was wrapped loosely around his forearm, as if even in unconsciousness she refused to let go.
To his right, Lilith lay with her head on his shoulder, her silver-white hair pooling across his chest, her fingers intertwined with his, her grip loose but possessive.
Adam lay there, staring at the ceiling, his mind slowly processing the situation.
’This is... really uncomfortable.’
His body ached. His limbs were pinned. He couldn’t move an inch without disturbing at least one of them.
But he didn’t try to move.
He let out a slow, quiet breath, his gaze softening as he looked at the three women sleeping around him.
’... i guess we made it out of that place.’
His hand twitched, the one not pinned by Alice, and he gently brushed a strand of hair from Lilith’s face. She stirred slightly, a soft murmur escaping her lips, but didn’t wake.
Adam’s lips curved into a faint, tired smile.
’This is... not the worst way to wake up.’
He closed his eyes, allowing himself to sink back into the warmth, the weight, the quiet rhythm of their breathing.
